Tradition: pruning the boxwoods of the Nesque gorges

On the roads of , pruning boxwood and oak trees has been a tradition since 1911. Meticulous work carried out every winter by passionate agents, making these roads even more spectacular.

The century-old tradition of tree pruning along the roadsides of Vaucluse

Along the picturesque roads of Vaucluse, a little-known but spectacular tradition attracts curious eyes: the pruning and sculpture of boxwood and oak trees. Initiated in 1911, this custom is perpetuated by road agents, true shadow artists.

Roads sculpted by passion

From December to March, three agents from the Sault road center, Gilles Pelet, Jérôme Pons and Jérôme Raspail, work under the direction of Éric Picca to prune and sculpt 15 km of vegetation. These efforts are concentrated on emblematic roads: the Gorges de la Nesque, the Méthamis road, the Flassan road and the Col des Abeilles. These roads, among the most beautiful in the department, become a natural theater where art and tradition meet.

The art of pruning: an age-old technique

Pruning boxwood and green and white oaks requires electric machines and meticulous know-how. Before pruning, the branches are tied with string to give them the desired shape, followed by precise pruning. This art requires patience and precision inherited from the ancient road workers.

Certain plant sculptures, such as the famous “Vallon de la Madeleine chicken”, demonstrate the talent and creativity of the agents. This unique work, where the hen's crest is colored red, is renewed every year to the delight of passers-by.

A tradition that symbolizes dedication

These careful prunings are not only a sign of the officers' passion, but also a mark of the meticulous maintenance of the roads. They offer residents and visitors a unique spectacle, while ensuring that the beauty of the Provençal landscapes is enhanced.

By exploring these routes, it is possible to come across other surprising works on the Vaison-la-Romaine side towards Brantes, where the carving traditions continue. Vaucluse continues to combine heritage, aesthetics and nature throughout the seasons.
