Decrease in daily smoking in France in 2023

In 2023, 31.1% of people aged 18 to 75 reported smoking tobacco daily or occasionally. The proportion of men remains higher: 33.8% of men and 28.6% of women.

However, daily smoking decreased from 25.3% to 23.1% between 2021 and 2023. This reduction affects both men and women and in the same proportions. From 27.8% to 25.4% for men, it decreases from 23% to 20.9% for women. The reduction is more obvious if we refer to the number of daily smokers in 2000. Nearly 30% of women and 35% of men then reported smoking daily. But if there is a drop in the number of daily smokers, there is an increase in occasional smokingthis increasing from 6.4% to 8% between 2021 and 2023. Overall, between daily and occasional smoking, the prevalence of smoking has remained stable since 2021.

On the other hand, the quantity of tobacco sold in fell by 14%, going from 43,188 tonnes in 2021 to 37,120 tonnes in 2023. At the same time, sales of smoking cessation treatments carried out in pharmacies (reimbursed or not) are increasing over the same period, with an increase of 17%.
