Lobster fishermen on P.E.I. frustrated by the prices

There are only a few weeks left in the spring lobster season in Prince Edward Island. If fishermen are satisfied with the quantity of catches, they are frustrated by the prices offered at the docks.

According to Jfriend Bruceof North Lake, fishermen received between $6.50 and $7 per pound this year. An amount that has not changed for 18 years.

I went back to 2006 and the price was similar. The only major difference is that the fees have increased. Whether it’s bait or fueltell Jamie Bruce.

The fisherman of North Lake believes, however, that demand for Prince Edward Island lobster has increased around the world thanks to effective promotion of the province’s crustacean.

But any increase in demand and prices does not trickle down to the dock. We simply don’t control where we sell our products. It’s the buyers who control itadds Jamie Bruce.

Better control

Thus, some are asking the government to intervene on the issue of resale prices.

Industry observers report that more products are now being sold and prices are starting to rise, just as the spring season is winding down.

Charlie McGeogheganpresident of Lobster Fishers of PEI Marketing Board believes that better control is needed.

The price practically doubles overnight. As soon as the season is over and the buyers have the lobsters in their hands, they can charge whatever they wantsaid Charlie McGeoghegan.

It is particularly aimed at buyers who sell to restaurants in the province, where lobster can fetch between $40 and $45 per pound.

In an email addressed to CBCLobster Council of Canada CEO Geoff Irvine said his organization does not comment on specific shore-based lobster prices.
