Percé Mayor Cathy Poirier announced her resignation Tuesday morning, explaining that it was impossible for her to endorse the latest decisions made by the municipal council.

In June, Ms. Poirier indicated that she was thinking about her political future.

A few weeks earlier, the municipal council had taken advantage of his absence to reverse several of his decisions, including that of closing the tourist information office, a choice which had caused discontent among the population.

Then, the eco-responsible commercial street project, which was to connect Route 132 to the Geopark, was abandoned by the municipal council, as was the appeal process of the judgment of the Superior Court of Quebec which had invalidated the collection of the tourist fee.

These last two decisions were particularly difficult to swallow for the mayor, who believes that they were essential to the development of the Percé economy.

A painful decision

Despite everything, the decision to resign was painful for Cathy Poirier, who specified that this announcement is the result of long reflections and particular circumstances.

Harassment, personal attacks, assaults and intimidation have taken their toll on my commitment.

His resignation is effective immediately.

Furthermore, two investigations are still ongoing: in addition to that of theUPAC an administrative investigation is being conducted by an external firm mandated by the City. This latest step has also led to the suspension with pay of the director of urban planning Ghislain Pitre, who is also Cathy Poirier’s spouse.

Cathy Poirier had been in office as mayor since 2017.
