While the French say they are ready to spend more this year for the holidays, Dominique Schelcher, CEO of Cooperative U, took stock of the products that will see their prices drop.
Tuesday November 26, Dominique Schelcher, CEO of Cooperative U, was invited to the BFMTV set. The opportunity for the entrepreneur to announce good news to the French: the price of food should continue to fall for the end-of-year holidays. This is particularly the case for foie gras, which will experience a decline “around 5 to 6% and that’s good news”rejoiced the boss of U.
For two years, breeders have had to deal with avian flu. But thanks to major vaccination campaigns on farms, supply should return to normal this year. Thus, the availability of foie gras should be 33% higher compared to 2023.
The price of chocolate continues to soar
Another food that should see its price drop this year: oysters. Dominique Schelcher also encourages the French to consume it in order to support producers in difficulty. “It will be significantly cheaper than last year for the oyster basket”he said on the set of our colleagues.
However, for chocolates, you will need to warm up the credit card. According to Dominique Schelcher, the prices of this product have increased by 5 to 6% this year, as a result of difficult harvests in West Africa.
But that doesn't seem to deter consumers. According to a study by Cofidis, 32% of French people say they are not trying to limit their spending this year, i.e. 6 points more compared to 2023. This is the highest level recorded since the Covid crisis. For the Christmas meal, respondents said they were ready to spend an average of 132 euros.
