Trash bags to support the Nati cause cringe in Geneva

Mauro Poggia has little taste for the trash bags bearing the national emblem that sit in the city of Geneva. The Geneva States Advisor questions the dignity of such an operation. And the City responds.

The City of Geneva swapped its yellow trash bags for the Swiss flag during Euro 2024. A habit adopted by the Geneva authorities to color the streets with Swiss colors. If we are told that this is not the first time that criticism has been made on this subject, the affair seems to make the municipality smile more than grimace.

A choice that makes Mauro Poggia laugh less, who expressed his questions through the social network LinkedIn. The Geneva States advisor said “pensive” in the face of such an operation.

A reflection which quickly sparked a reaction and comments flourished on the Geneva lawyer’s page. Many of them do not understand the city’s approach, like former State Councilor Luc Barthassat, arguing that it is the fruit of a “bobo left humor”. “This would credit the authors with the approach of political reflection. I think there was no appreciation of the pros and cons. One person had the idea, and the others certainly let it happen,” replies Mauro Poggia, contacted by us.

Without making it a matter of state, the Geneva politician develops and confirms his skepticism concerning these trash bags adorned with the white cross:

“It’s every 2 years, when there is the Euro or the World Cup. I am not shocked like an extreme patriot might be. I find that this is not in the best taste, because a trash can does not have to be an acceptable support for a national emblem. Even if the authors of the approach (are we witnessing the flow of stocks today, without the question having been asked of current political leaders?) did not have this ulterior motive, we expect them to tactful. Can you imagine the French flag on trash cans in France? That would cause a scandal. I imagine the sly look of our border workers…”

The trash bag of discord in Geneva.

Here he is the object of the stir: a garbage bag which sows discord in Geneva.

As for aesthetics, everyone “will come with their own proposal,” explains Mauro Poggia. For the positive points distributed to the City of Geneva, the elected representative of the Geneva Citizens’ Movement (MCG) admits to us that “the yellow is not superb” on the official bags of the City of Geneva and that the Swiss flag has “the deserves to highlight the trash.”

However, he is responsible for adding a coin to the machine:

“Ask the politicians who find this normal, if they would put their head on a trash can for their next campaign!”

A clumsy act, according to the Geneva elected official. But then, how should we best support the Nati? Mauro Poggia prefers to focus on more personal acts. For example, when residents display their colors on windows and balconies, whatever their nationality, he says. But according to him, by way of conclusion, “abstention is for me better than support in bad taste”.

Authorities respond

Spikes that the municipality brushes aside, preferring to keep the sporting course. “We never change a winning formula,” comments the Department of Security and Sports of the City of Geneva. The latter how:

“In addition to brightening up the streets a little and contributing to the popular fervor around our team, each time the roads of the City of Geneva replace their yellow bags with red ones, we see that the Nati wins and passes often the first round of the competition. We will therefore not take responsibility for causing our national team to lose by interrupting this practice.
