Surprise, a Nutri-Score to fight against planned obsolescence is taking shape in Switzerland

It’s a paradox. While the food Nutri-Score is fading away – notably because of its abandonment by Migros – it is possible that its technological counterpart will appear in Switzerland. This Wednesday, in a particularly complicated message to understand, the Federal Council confirmed its intention to introduce such an index. Although there is still a long way to go for sustainability labels to appear on smartphones, televisions or drones, the FRC welcomes this notable progress.

Over the past ten years, in Bern, several parliamentary interventions have attempted to encourage the authorities to act. Without much success, Switzerland having never adopted a specific law against planned obsolescence. Published on Wednesday, the eight-page report entitled “Legally sanctioning the deliberate shortening of the lifespan of a product” is also a priori in the same line. Thus, the Federal Council considered, in its message, that “in warranty law, criminal law and competition law, there already exist general rules containing instruments to act against the deliberate shortening of the lifespan some products.”
