Liège University Hospital opens the first #aortic center in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation

The University Hospital of Liège has just opened the “Raymond Limet Liège Aortic Center”, a medical establishment specializing in the diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases of the aorta, the main blood vessel of the body which transports blood from the heart to the remains of the body, he announced Friday in a press release. This is a first in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

“The Aortic Center at Liège University Hospital is designed to provide high-quality care for patients with aortic pathologies, such as abdominal aortic aneurysms, aortic dissections and other associated disorders,” explains the hospital.

This center brings together experts from different medical specialties, such as cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, radiology, nuclear medicine, rheumatology, ophthalmology, neurosurgery, pediatrics, nephrology, intensive care, medical imaging , emergencies, orthopedics, anesthesiology and even genetics. This guarantees a comprehensive approach to assessing and treating aortic diseases, as Professor Sakalihasan, who leads the project, explains: “When a patient is treated for aortic disease confirmed by imaging performed in any hospital, we carry out multidisciplinary investigations, but also at the Research Center of the Department of Surgery (CREDEC) where we carry out a hemodynamic study and biological research. Depending on all the results collected, we then offer an appropriate medical treatment, classic surgical or endovascular.”

Thanks to the Center, the succession of examinations, consultations and even interventions is greatly facilitated for the patient: “When relevant, patients referred to the Cardiovascular Surgery department for inflammatory disease and/or infection of the aorta (aortitis) are for example automatically referred to the Rheumatology department to coordinate the various biological explorations and by classic or functional imaging. The patient journey is therefore fluid and fast, which is essential for this type of disease,” emphasizes the Professor.

There are already two aortic centers in Belgium. These are located in Ghent and Antwerp. The “Raymond Limet Liège Aortic Center” is therefore the first in the south of the country to see the light of day at the Liège University Hospital.
