Great start for the deployment of Ultra High Definition! A few months before the Olympic Games, no less than 443,800 people will now be able to watch France 2 UHD in Occitanie. For its 5th launch phase, Télédiffusion de France (TDF) put seven transmitters into service, including one at Pic de Nore, near Carcassonne.
Free, high quality, open access or anonymous, praise is pouring out when talking about TNT. The platform is the major reception mode, covering no less than 97% of the population. TDF, the digital infrastructure and network operator, is working hand in hand with television channels, equipment manufacturers and many other players to reinvent DTT broadcasting. For this, TDF has been developing a number of UHD broadcast tests for six years now in order to “experiment and demonstrate the performance of new formats and broadcast technology”.
What is UHD?
UHD (or 4K) technology consists of offering viewers an image definition four times higher than High Definition, but not only that! This also brings changes such as improved contrast radio (HDR), a wider color range, a higher frame rate or even more immersive sound.
A plan that extends throughout France
Since the start of the year, no less than four first phases of deployment have already made it possible to cover a large part of French regions. During this 5th launch phase, it is Carcassonne’s turn to switch to UHD with the Pic de Nore antenna. From May 22, Occitanie will also be able to watch the France 2 channel in Ultra High Definition. However, you will need to have a compatible television. The “Ma TNT” site, published by TDF (www.matnt.tdf.fr), allows you to check whether your area is covered by UHD as well as identify the frequencies used for this broadcast, which complements the 31 channels already available.
