After an exceptional closure in 2023 due to works, the Nantes to Brest canal has reopened last March. For more than a month, the channel

was supplied with water by the Bout-de-Bois reservoir located in Saffré.

Landslide

A landslide was noted on May 10 on the embankment of the Vioreau feed channel at a place called Quiquengrogne,” explains the Loire-Atlantique department in a press release.

The Department, owner and manager of the canal, carried out the drying of the channel to identify the problem.

During the final refilling of the channel on Monday June 10, the Department detected infiltrations on Wednesday June 12 calling into question its stability.

Emergency work

To resolve the problem, the Department undertook emergency work: “installation of a geomembrane”, sealing of the ends with mortar and monitoring.

Due to these arrangements, navigation of the artificial section between the Remaudais lock in Heric and the Quilheix lock in Nort sur Erdre, is closed.

The work will require, at least, two weeks closed. The Department hopes for a “reopening as soon as possible”.

Professionals will benefit, upon reservation, from a navigation exemption.
