At the end of the Moroccan Nadorcott campaign in March-April, the Moroccan citrus season came to a rather abrupt end. Many producers preferred not to start producing the Maroc Late variety this season, as was the case for Abdellah Agga of Yanour Logistic.

Agga explains, “Although the Nadorcott campaign went well, in terms of volume and quality, our prices were high, and it is difficult to compete with Egypt. A number of our producers preferred to concentrate on other cultures.”

While Egypt’s ever-growing citrus production is widely available in Europe due to the Red Sea crisis, Moroccan citrus volumes are due to persistent drought and unfavorable climate.

Late varieties take a hit. Agga says, “Some varieties have completely disappeared, like Ortanique. Others are disappearing because producers prefer other varieties of citrus, or even other crops. Clementines and Maroc Late oranges are thus constantly decrease”.

Nevertheless, the grower says he maintains a constant acreage for early varieties in preparation for the next season. He adds, “We hope that the water and climate situation will improve, and we will see where we are at the end of August.”

The grower concludes: “There is still demand for varieties such as Nadorcott, which come from several regions, including West Africa, the Middle East and Russia.”
