controls in the carpool lane

A new carpooling control system is being created in Vallard.

ATMB has just implemented a new system to combat fraud. This is a first in France! The carpooling lane seems to be very successful, it is used more and more, including by single users on board. Measures are therefore being taken.

A camera and a barrier

A camera system connected to a barrier now makes it possible to prohibit access to this carpool lane to people alone in their vehicle. The camera detects the number of people in the vehicle and commands the barrier to open if there are two or more people. If only one person is present, the barrier remains closed and the car must return to normal traffic lanes. In 2018, 2 out of 10 vehicles using it were alone on board. In 2024, nearly 9 out of 10 vehicles will be alone on board, hence the need to take measures.

Reward carpoolers

ATMB explains that this measure aims to “restore value to this carpooling route which rewards cross-border workers who make the effort to carpool”. This route was opened 5 years ago. It was the first cross-border carpooling lane on the motorway in France. Over a distance of 500 meters, it allows carpoolers to save time, 3 to 5 minutes on average. According to ATMB, the initiative has made it possible to “reduce traffic jams by 40% in length, duration and frequency”. Carpooling increased from 10.8% in 2018 to 12.5% in 2024.

More than 22,000 vehicles per day in Vallard

Thônex-Vallard customs is used by more than 22,000 vehicles every day. A quarter of this traffic is recorded between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.
