No more apps taking up twice as much space when installed: the next version of macOS will no longer require double the free space for apps downloaded from the Mac App Store. Good news for all users, especially gamers.

macOS suffers from a strange limitation when installing apps from the Mac App Store. Users must verify that they have double the required space on their machine to complete the initial download and installation.

Apple will correct this nasty defect in macOS Sequoia since beta 2 of the system, which is scheduled for release in the fall, permanently removes this prerequisite, which is frankly penalizing for all users, especially gamers.

Good news for video games on Mac

In the release notes for this second beta for macOS 15, Apple indicates that the App Store no longer needs double the free space when installing an application. The manufacturer now assures that ” the free space required will now be the final install size of the app, plus a small buffer ».

This is very good news for users with little storage space and especially for video games. Indeed, if you wanted to install, for exampleResident Evil 4 Remakeone of the best optimized games for Mac, you needed no less than 130 GB of free space, while the game weighs “only” 65 GB. Imagine then for even heavier games that could be around the 100 GB.

This is a decision that goes in the right direction and should make it easier for all users to install heavier applications. Obviously, we are still far from the practicality of Steam, but we feel that Apple wants to make gaming even easier on its platform.

You can already test this new version of macOS via the developer beta or wait for the public beta in July before its final release in the fall.
