A Toronto police officer was arrested and charged with sexual assault and breach of trust Wednesday in connection with a relationship he had with an alleged victim 14 years ago.

Andrew Corkill, 49, is believed to have met the woman in 2010 through his work as a police officer. Between 2010 and 2011, according to the Toronto Police Service, Mr. Corkill and his alleged victim had an inappropriate personal and sexual relationship.

During this period, Mr Corkill is said to have sexually assaulted the alleged victim. He is suspended with pay, under the Police Services Act.

In February, the officer with 22 years of experience was demoted after pleading guilty to two counts of dishonorable conduct. According to the presiding judge, Mr. Corkill had notably, inappropriately, continued to communicate with a victim of domestic violence.

In his ruling, the president noted that no journalists were present during the hearing, but if the matter was reported in the media, it would would damage the reputation of the Police Service.

Mr Corkill had already been sanctioned several times by the police court before this demotion. In February 2019, for example, he was convicted of two charges of insubordination for using the police database for personal reasons.
