It was around 10:45 a.m. when firefighters were alerted to an accident involving a heifer in the town of Saint-Jean-Lachalm. The latter slipped into the Pataud stream, located below the place called Conil, in Conilis precisely.

A stream difficult to access

The Puy-en-Velay firefighters went to the site and were forced to use a 4X4 vehicle to complete the perilous descent on the difficult path which leads to the bottom of the ravine.

They took with them all the equipment necessary to rescue the heifer in difficulty. But this was not enough, because the place was inaccessible to any means of assistance. The firefighters had to finish on foot. They discovered the animal in a hole, seriously injured.

The helicopter could not access the place where the heifer was stuck either. There were too many branches and too many trees for the machine to get any closer.

Rescuing animals is part of their missions, the firefighters looked for all possible solutions to get her out of there, but there was nothing to do. In consultation with the owner of the animal, it was decided to euthanize it in order to reduce its suffering and respect animal welfare.
