Canada announces additional sanctions against Russia and its illegal war against Ukraine

June 13, 2024 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honorable Mélanie Joly, announced today that Canada is imposing additional sanctions under the Special Economic Measures for Russia Regulations. These sanctions are being imposed in coordination with Canada’s international partners at the G7 Summit in Italy, which takes place from June 13 to 15, 2024.

These sanctions target numerous individuals and entities involved in disinformation and propaganda operations, including those identified by Canada’s Rapid Response Mechanism. These sanctions also include entities in the Russian military-industrial complex that supply important electrical technologies and components to Russia’s war efforts. In addition, they target entities that participate in the circumvention of sanctions that facilitate Russia’s access to sanctioned goods or to revenues from oil sold at a price higher than the ceiling set by the G7.

The announcement also includes export bans on computer numerically controlled machine tools that Russia could use for weapons production and manufacturing. These prohibitions, which harmonize Canada’s measures with those of other countries that have implemented Tier IV (B) of the list of high priority common items, prohibit any person in Canada and any Canadian or any Canadian overseas supplying these items to Russia.

The measures announced today are part of Canada’s support for Ukraine. They aim to harm Russia’s ability to wage its illegal war by limiting access to components necessary for Russia’s military efforts, depriving Russia of the revenue it uses to finance its illegal war, and undermining its disinformation activities.
