From June 20 to September 2, 2024, four gigantic paintings by the famous Icelandic painter Erró, dedicated to superheroes from American comics, can be discovered. Installed on the banks of the Charente in Angoulême, between the Comics Museum and the Moebius Ship, these floating works include: Captain America (1988), Silver Sable Saga (1999), Ghost Rider Saga (1998) and Silver Sand (1999).

Erró, born in 1932 in Iceland and based in Paris since 1958, is the co-founder of the pictorial movement of narrative figuration in France. He began introducing comics into his collage paintings in 1963, paying homage to American popular culture and the art of Marvel comics. His works are distinguished by the power of their lines and colors, the audacity of the framing and perspectives, as well as the dynamism and iconic character of the figures.

Erró and Angoulême, a long-term relationship

In 1981, Erró had already signed a 200 m² mural in Angoulême, entitled Homage to comics, bringing together iconic characters such as Tintin, Batman, the Nickelodes and Tarzan. This fresco is located on Boulevard Jean-Moulin, in the Ma Campagne district of Angoulême.

The Icelandic artist will also be at the heart of an exhibition at the Angoulême Museum, from June 21 to December 8, 2024. Entitled “ Art history revisited », she will highlight Erró’s collages, in which he inserts characters from paintings by Ingres, Delacroix, Léger or Picasso, cohabiting with cinema stars, politicians, astronauts or even comic book heroes .
