CEPI and CEPIA are students who have completed nursing or practical nursing training and who will soon take the exam of their respective professional order. Externs are nursing students who have one year of training left to complete.

All of these people do not have the same scope of activities as a nurse or practical nurse and must be supervised in carrying out certain tasks.

In total, 324 of these up-and-coming members will walk the floor of the various CIUSSS hospital and accommodation units. There are 167 CEPI or CEPIA and 157 external.

“We will have other people arriving later this summer, either people who wanted to take a vacation or those who have not finished their school curriculum yet. In the end, we should have a number roughly the same as last year,” explains Marie-Claude Jutras, head of department at the CIUSSS nursing department.

Last year, 400 CEPI, CEPIA and external professionals came to lend a hand in Estrie. This number is not insignificant, because, in an ideal world, the CIUSSS would be short 560 nurses and 150 auxiliary nurses to fill all the positions necessary for these job titles, notes the deputy director of human resources of the CIUSSS, Marc- Antoine Rouillard.

The CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS therefore rolls out the red carpet for these young workers, notably by holding welcome days with a food truck and various activities.

“We really want to focus on retention. We start with a welcome day so that it leaves an impression and so that they can meet as many colleagues and people from the organization as possible,” notes Loïc Vermeulen, coordinator of work organization at the care directorate. CIUSSS nurses.

Ready for summer

And the strategy seems to be working. Future nurses who The gallery discussed mentioned appreciating the CIUSSS approach.

This is particularly the case of Laurence Picard, who will be CEPI in the emergency room of the Hôtel-Dieu in Sherbrooke. She did her externship there last year and would like to stay not only in Estrie, but in this unit when she becomes a nurse.

For his part, Zacharie Bodin will act as CEPI at CHSLD Argyll. He says he is excited about starting his job, which will allow him to experience real clinical situations that will prepare him for work as a nurse.

And the contribution of all CEPI, CEPIA and external staff will be crucial for all CIUSSS teams this summer. In full modulation of services for the holidays, the arrival of these fresh forces allows the establishment to keep certain sectors afloat.

“It brings a workforce. These people will develop skills in the coming months and they will help in the context of the reduction in services announced last month,” underlines Mr. Vermeulen.
