Every year, nearly 75,000 new books appear in French bookstores. Many of them will be presented between this Friday November 8 and Sunday November 11 at the Brive Book Fair. To find our way through all these works, we asked the Corrèze booksellers the question: what are the releases that absolutely should not be missed in 2024?
A story rooted in a remote village
Without hesitation for Jennifer Besson, it will be: “Madelaine before dawn” (ed. JC Lattès) by Sandrine Colette, one of the 4 finalists of Goncourt 2024.
“She is one of my favorite authors. There is always a strong psychological element in her novels. In this story, we are in a small, very remote country village. The inhabitants live with difficulty, under the control of a very rich familydevelops the sales assistant at Cultura.
Madelaine, a wild child landed in the village, is going to be adopted by a couple who cannot have children. “It will bring them a whole new vision of what life can be. It’s an incredibly powerful read,” assure Jennifer Besson.
An introspective fake thriller
Another literary choice by Jennifer Besson: “Day of surf” (ed. Gallimard) by Maylis De Kerangal, also guest of the Brive Book Fair 2024. The bookseller recommends this novel which opens with the discovery of a corpse found on a beach in Le Havre in Normandy. The story begins as a thriller, but is not really one…
It's tormented, we feel this stormy atmosphere on this dark beach. It’s a very powerful and introspective reading moment. I really liked it.

A comic book tribute to the western
For comics and graphic novels, the bookstore specializing in the genre, Bulles de papier, recommends “Review Comanche” (ed. Le Lombard) signed Romain Renard. “A tribute to the western and the great figures of the American West”describes bookseller Thierry Gallic.
The scene is set in California, in 1930. Tormented by his crimes, the old cowboy Red Dust hides in a cabin deep in the woods. When Vivienne, who introduces herself as a librarian curious about life in the Wild West, knocks on her door, Red Dust ends up being taken on a breathtaking journey.
It's an exciting, very well-produced album that will please western aficionados, Hermann fans and comic book fans in general.

A sci-fi epic with sharp graphics
Thierry Gallic also fell in love with reading “The fossil heritage” (ed. Delcourt) by Philippe Valette, a science fiction epic. “The album is magnificent. The drawing has a slightly naive touch, but there is a lot of work in terms of 3D for the settings. It's a great science fiction graphic novel”, assures the specialist.
A comic strip close to a documentary
Also not to be missed: the works of Emmanuel Lepage, closer to documentary than fiction. The author is designated as the big guest of the 2024 Book Fair, in the comics category. To discover his latest publication, “At the foot of the stars” (ed. Futuropolis)recommended by booksellers, go to the Espace des 3 Provinces this weekend.
