During the night from Monday to Tuesday, the gendarmes foiled an attempt to introduce drugs and telephones into the Fontenay-le-Comte prison, in South Vendée.
While conducting surveillance near the prison, law enforcement noticed a ladder placed against one of the surrounding walls, which aroused their suspicions. Shortly before 1 a.m., they saw two individuals near the penitentiary center. Upon seeing the police, the two suspects tried to flee.
A 19-year-old arrested with a package containing 100 grams of cannabis
The gendarmes managed to arrest one of the two individuals, a young man of 19 years old, already known to their services. The latter attempted to throw a package containing 100 grams of cannabis, food and telephones into the prison grounds. The suspect was taken into custody for attempting to smuggle illicit products. The second suspect remains on the run and was still wanted this Tuesday evening, according to the public prosecutor of La Roche-sur-Yon.
Screening of packages in prison, a frequent phenomenon in France
The throwing of packages over prison walls is a phenomenon regularly denounced by prison unions in France, even if it remains uncommon in Fontenay-le-Comte according to the gendarmes. This type of incident raises concerns regarding the security of establishments and the means of surveillance.
