Montreal wants to build a huge tram network by 2050

The Plante administration dreams of crisscrossing the city with a gigantic tram network by 2050 so that three out of four Montrealers will have access to structuring public transportation near their homes, according to its new urban plan unveiled Tuesday morning.

Despite the major challenges currently facing public transportation financing, Montreal is thinking big for the next 26 years.

This is the observation that we can make by reading its 2050 urban planning and mobility plan, presented to journalists on Tuesday morning.

With the objective of becoming “green, fair and resilient”, the city wants to add more than 300 km of structuring public transport on its territory.

To do this, it particularly wants to equip itself with an impressive 184 km tram network which would serve many major routes in the metropolis.

But that’s not all: she also wants to build the pink line of the Montreal metro which would this time stop at a future station of the blue line whose extension to the east is in progress.

Also, the orange line should be extended from Côte-Vertu station so that its other end also reaches Laval.

Only 30% of Montrealers currently have access to structuring transportation near their home.

With all these projects, the City has the ambitious objective of increasing this proportion to 75%.
