overwhelmed by care and operating costs, the Inaya shelter calls for help

Sunday June 16, the Inaya shelter is organizing a charity day. Its volunteers and its manager, Helena Daelman, offer several activities on site. The objective? Save the shelter. The sanctuary is overwhelmed by requests for care and operating costs, including veterinary costs. “There are 24,000 euros in unpaid invoices. Every day, we are called to take in animals that are often sick, injured or not sterilized. A third leaves the pound,” laments the manager.

The Inaya shelter welcomes animals in distress (dogs, cats and others) from the department. “In 2022, 186 animals entered the shelter. In 2023, there would be 306, an increase of 65%. This year the situation is even more difficult. Currently, there are 177 entries, including 107 cats and kittens, 67 dogs and puppies, three goats, the latter figures. We’re not yet halfway through the year. At this rate, we risk reaching a new record for entries. We have to refuse animals on a daily basis due to lack of space. »

Throughout the year, volunteers and the manager take care of more than 300 animals at the shelter.

Adoption days

The manager and her team regularly organize adoption days, food collections for residents, partnerships to try to raise funds, but also to equip the site. Despite a complex situation, Helena Daelman wants to be optimistic: “Our glimmer of hope is that thanks to the votes of the Lot-et-Garonnais for the participatory budget, we will be able to build four more kennels and equip them, then set up a large park so that our dogs have daily activities in addition to walks for their well-being, while waiting to find their new families. »

Each year, the shelter tries to get hundreds of animals adopted and also takes care of the “non-adoptable ones”.
