Several associations and social organizations involved in the reuse of textiles in Finistère are sounding the alarm: they are overwhelmed by donations. “The department is particularly impacted by an imbalance between the volume of second-hand textile deposits and the handling of these. »
The recycling centers Un peu d'R, Ribine, Le Tri porter, La p'tite Boîte and La Pince, Emmaüs Brest, Le Secours Catholique, the Regional Chamber of the Social and Solidarity Economy and the ESS center of the country of Brest have signed a joint press release to invite Finisterians to only donate clothes in good condition, ready to be reused.
Recycling in slow motion
« The textile to recycle is no longer mainly supported in the department, and this for an indefinite transitional period”, explains this press release, referring to “the crisis situation of an important local collector”. At the end of September 2024, the Abi 29 association, specializing in textile collection, filed for bankruptcy.
The signatories also indicate that the textile sector is going through a difficult period internationallye and that exports to countries specializing in recycling are slowed down.
Better sorting
They ask individuals to:
- only deposit textiles in good condition, ready to be reused, in recycling centers (during opening hours);
- do not place anything in condemned containers or at the foot of full containers;
- keep damaged or non-reusable textiles as they are at home or in a recycling center, “while waiting for collections to resume”.
It is therefore not a question of stopping giving but of better sort.
