Friday May 31, 2024 took place a visit of forestry site has Viazac, thinning of Douglas fir, with maintenance of hardwoods to promote the diversity of species. This occurs as a continuation of the “Villages and Forests of Burland” project which started at the start of 2024 with 4 public meetings in the municipalities of Viazac, Saint-Perdoux And Prendignes.

Forest owners united

After the time of recognizing the deficit in forest management, and that of mobilizing forest owners, comes the time for action. It is in this dynamic that the first forest diagnostics were carried out by the National Center for Forest Property (CNPF) Occitanie, at the request of the owners. This diagnosis is the prerequisite for obtaining recommendations for improving wooded plots.

In parallel with these diagnostics, and in order to keep the momentum going, a visit to a forestry site was offered by the forestry firm.forestry experts Forest Evolution which is mandated for the management and project supervision of silvicultural operations (exploitation, silvicultural work etc.), and organized by the Forest Charter of PETR Figeac Quercy Dordogne Valley. It was with complete transparency that the doors of the construction site were opened to us, where all the themes were addressed: accessibility, forest trails, crossing of watercourses, difficult weather conditions due to the rainy spring, destination and marketing of wood and economic balance of a site, pooling of sites, etc. The Célé Lot Médian river union was also present to discuss issues related to water and regulations related to the crossing of waterways with machines.

“No work has been carried out for at least 30 years on this plot, the objective is therefore to carry out gentle thinning, in order to make room for future trees, while promoting the mixture of species and encouraging deciduous trees that arrived naturally, and to avoid clearcutting as much as possible” explains Jean-Mathieu Colin de Forêt Evolution. The owner wants exemplary sustainable management for his forest.

An exchange with Adrien Longuet, from the forestry work company in charge of silvicultural operations, also allowed participants to discover the different forestry machines present on the site: skidder, feller, skidder, each machine has its use. He works alone and carries out all the tasks on site, but it would be better to hire someone! Constructive exchanges which fascinated the forest owners present, motivated to in turn improve their forest, taking advantage of the collective dynamic initiated.

Other visits will be offered, including one organized by the CNFPT Occitanie on the improvement of chestnut copses in the area, next fall.
