Alexandre Roumat is not strictly speaking “new”. But the 3e Toulouse line, capped 4 times during the 2024 6 Nations Tournament, could reach a milestone with the XV of France during this fall tour.
According to the first trends seen during training in Marcoussis, Olivier's son should be holder in 3e lignesucceeding in particular the Toulonnais Charles Ollivon who would have moved back a notch in the hierarchy.
Quand Meafou loue Roumat
Trained in Capbreton-Hossegor, passed through Biarritz, Alexandre Roumat left Bordeaux-Bègles in the summer of 2022 to join Toulouse. A paid choice. Immediately, the 27-year-old integrated into the Rouge et Noir's style of play, which suited him like a glove.
Often underrated, Roumat silenced the critics by becoming essential to Toulouse. “Alexandre, as soon as he arrived in Toulouse, he did the job very well. I am very happy to see him in the French team, he is a very professional guy,” greeted his club and national team teammate, Emmanuel Meafou, at a press conference.
His great technical qualities and his aerial profile seem to fit the new strategy that the French staff would have decided to put in place. “He’s a very good player, complete, very strong in the air but also on the ground, moving around a lot,” says Meafou. Who says: “I think he will stay in this team for a long time”.
8 in Toulouse, 7 in Blue?
Starting at No. 8 during the 6 matches he played at the start of the season, and more widely since his arrival at Stade Toulousain, Alexandre Roumat should however evolve into a No. 7 position with the Blues, alongside Alldritt and Cros.
Playing flanker has already happened to him, in his very beginnings with Toulouse, or when he was in Bordeaux and Biarritz. “Yes, you touch more balls in 8 than in 7, and you have more responsibilities behind the scrum. But that doesn't change much for him. He will not need any particular adaptation,” assures Meafou.
It is this Thursday, at 11 a.m., that Fabien Galthié will reveal the composition of the team to face Japan, 14e nation in the World Rugby rankings.
