“I was outside, I saw smoke coming from the roof of the building. I got in and emptied the fire extinguisher. It wasn't enough. So I took a fire hose and sprayed the hay. But hey, when the fire starts in the hay, it’s over.” It was a little before 2 p.m. this Friday, October 25, when a fire broke out at this poultry breeder, in Planguenoual, commune of Lamballe-Armor.
The 34-year-old son inconvenienced by the fumes
He and his son tried to save the trapped animals. Among them: a thousand chicks born the day before, installed in one of the four rooms of the agricultural building. None survived. The poultry present in the four adjoining rooms, for their part, had a better fate.
We took a lot of risks.
“We took a lot of risks,” continues the breeder. We opened the doors. I regularly left the building to breathe outside, but he stayed. He must have inhaled a lot of carbon monoxide.” Aged 34, the son, inconvenienced by the smoke, was transported to the Saint-Brieuc hospital center by the Erquy fire brigade ambulance.
A short circuit in a heater mentioned
Around fifteen firefighters from the Lamballe-Armor and Perray emergency centers were mobilized. Using a water hose and a large capacity van, the fire was quickly brought under control. Around 250 m2 of the building's 1,000 m2 surface area were destroyed. The intervention ended shortly after 4:30 p.m.
According to initial information, a short circuit in one of the electric heaters could be the cause of the fire. “Fortunately,” emphasizes the farmer, “the partitions between the rooms are load-bearing walls and there is no frame. The building is inoperable as it is, but it was saved. » An investigation was opened by the gendarmerie to determine the exact causes of the incident.
