Gard: a fire breaks out in a coal silo on a Seveso classified industrial site, what we know

Since this Tuesday, November 5 morning at 3:30 a.m., the firefighters have been responding to a fire located in the lower part of a 31 m high silo containing 512 m3 of coal which broke out within the company Calcia cement factory, a Seveso classified industrial establishment, located in the Beaucaire industrial zone.

A fire broke out this Tuesday, November 5, 2024, in Beaucaire, in Gard, on the site of the Calcia factory, classified Seveso. The fire started inside a 31 m high silo containing coal. It was on the lower part that the flames began to rage, reports Midi Libre.

17 combat vehicles, around thirty personnel

Firefighters have been working since the middle of the night. No less than seventeen combat vehicles and around thirty personnel. Firefighters supported by the factory's security personnel “are currently cooling the silo from the outside using fire hoses and the integrated silo cooling system and inerting it.” This technique aims to avoid the risk of fire.

No injuries

No injuries have been reported, but factory activity can continue and no technical unemployment has been implemented.

The risk of spread averted

As the Gard firefighters explain, “this silo supplies a boiler room as part of the cement manufacturing process. The fire is being treated and the risk of spreading to neighboring establishments has been eliminated”.

At this time, we do not know the circumstances in which the fire broke out. Emergency services ask that the population avoids the area so as not to hinder their intervention.
