When the emergency services overflow, patients become impatient, get annoyed at waiting and are generally oppressive, even aggressive, believing that caregivers are not doing enough.
This situation gave the idea to Dr Firas Abou Kassem, an emergency doctor in La Manche, and to his colleague, Dr Ricardo Oliveira da Cunha, also an emergency doctor and friend since their internship, to create an app informing patients about their care.
“We observed that the patients had a bad experience of their visit to the emergency room, in particular due to the fact that we did not have time to keep them informed, at all times, of theprogress of their care. »
As a result, it has a negative impact for everyone: for patients because they are having a bad experience, for their loved ones because they are worried, and for caregivers because they are not satisfied not to being able to inform them and constantly disturb them, which interrupts them in their activities.
More than one in three patients use it
“FollowMe” is a application which allows follow in real time the stages of sound care pathway. It is used at the Foch hospital in Suresnes (Hauts-de-Seine). “Since the beginning of July,” reports Dr. Firas Abou Kassem, “we have had very positive feedback. So much so that the hospital decided to respond to the 2024 national competition of the digital health agency by highlighting our solution. The usage rate of our system is 40% in the emergency rooms of this Île-de-France hospital, meaning that more than one in three patients uses the application. »
Reception agents have noticed a drop in the level of tension in the waiting room.
L’application does not require installation on smartphone. When checking into the emergency room, the patient receives an SMS with a link to connect to their file on the hospital server. “He thus has access to his care pathway in real time. »
Several hospitals are interested in this solution developed within Normandie Incubation. “We won a call for projects from the Île-de-France Regional Health Agency to implement it at the Montreuil hospital. We are also in discussions with around ten emergency services in France for commissioning over the course of next year. »
The idea born in La Manche is making headway.
