The Swiss army must quickly have more resources available. The Council of States supported on Monday an increase in the spending ceiling of 4 billion, to reach 29.8 billion over the period 2025-2028, against the advice of the Federal Council.
In view of the security situation in Europe, the strengthening of our country’s defense capabilities must be carried out quickly, said Andrea Gmür-Schönenberger (Center/LU) for the commission. We must prepare for the worst-case scenario, as recommended by intelligence services everywhere.
The goal is to reach 1% of Switzerland’s GDP by 2030. The army cannot defend the country if we wait until 2035, as requested by the Federal Council, criticized Werner Salzmann (UDC/BE). “All the countries around us are increasing their military spending, NATO recommends 2% of GDP.”
The Federal Council did not want it, given the state of federal finances. The left also tried in vain to oppose it, calling for restraint. It failed by 27 votes to 17.
