For the first time, a woman is elected as head of the largest Spanish-speaking country. An inevitable result, since the two main candidates were women: Claudia Sheinbaum, the outgoing president’s runner-up, and Xochitl Galvez, the opposition candidate.

Claudia Sheinbaum, 61, is a former mayor of Mexico City, just like her mentor, outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. She campaigned by promising continuity of the policies of her predecessor, still very popular.

    • Nobel Prize winner

This trained engineer, who holds a doctorate in energy engineering, was part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), with which she received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. As mayor, she is best known for increasing security on the streets and making life difficult for criminal gang leaders.

Security, in fact, was the theme of the campaign of his rival, the former senator of indigenous origin Xochitl Galvez. Ms. Galvez went so far as to assert that Claudia Sheinbaum and her entire party had allied themselves with the drug traffickers who terrorize several regions of Mexico.

    • A substantiated statement?

Yes and no, experts say. Numerous Mexican media outlets have reported examples of collusion between the ruling party and drug cartels in recent years. The party would use the cartels to attack its adversaries. However, the suspicions expressed are not all proven, just like the involvement of the former mayor of Mexico City.

One thing is certain, cartels and violence have marked this electoral campaign. 37 political candidates have been killed in Mexico in recent months, including legislative and local elections that took place during the same period. 27,000 soldiers were mobilized on Sunday to ensure the security of the vote.
