Metz. Do you know when it hasn’t rained this much in Moselle?

Friday, May 17, the sky tore itself apart to pour continuous rain on the department, causing many rivers and streams to emerge from their beds. The result was numerous and impressive floods with serious consequences throughout the Moselle. Like in the Metz district of Vallières or even in Bouzonville.

Concretely, between May 14 and 17, the department received around 100 mm of water. That’s a fifth of the rainfall recorded since January 1st.

A record

As of May 23, the precipitation indicator showed 507.6 mm, or 221 mm more than the average observed over the period 1997-2022, according to the specialized site infoclimat.fr. A record! Indeed, to find traces of such a rainy start to the year, we have to go back to 1988 (471.8 mm).

Last year, we had to wait until August 4 to reach this level (510 mm). However, with 997.8 mm on December 31, 2023 was the rainiest year since… 1988 (1,054.2 mm). And this includes record rainfall between October 15 and December 15 (340 mm). According to Météo France, these are the two rainiest months since 1959.

2011, year of drought

For the record, in 2011, a year of very severe drought, we had to wait until November 30 to reach 507.9 mm.
