Two suspects in police custody after fatal brawl in Niort

An 18-year-old boy died and another was seriously injured during a brawl which occurred during the night from Saturday to Sunday in Niort, in Deux-Sèvres. Two young people were taken into custody on the evening of Sunday June 23.

Two 20-year-old young people went to the police and were taken into custody after a brawl which left one dead and another seriously injured with a knife this weekend in Niort, the prosecutor’s office announced on Monday June 24 .

“Two men came to turn themselves in (Sunday evening) at the Niort police station, admitting to being involved in the death and serious injuries that occurred the same morning,” Julien Wattebled, public prosecutor in Niort, said in a statement. They were taken into custody on charges of murder and attempted murder by investigators from the Poitiers organized and specialized crime division (DCOS). The two accused are unknown to the courts, said the prosecution, which emphasizes that “they face 30 years of criminal imprisonment, but remain presumed innocent”.

The course of the altercation still unknown

Their arrest comes after a brawl involving several people that occurred during the night from Saturday to Sunday in the Port-Boinot district, a former industrial wasteland in the center of Niort. The two victims were evacuated early Sunday to the hospital, where the death of a young man aged 18 was noted. The other victim, of the same age, underwent emergency surgery. His condition was “serious, but stabilized” late Sunday afternoon, according to the prosecution.

“Hearings and investigations are continuing to determine precisely the origin of the altercation and its exact course,” Julien Wattebled said on Monday.
