Ordinary naturalization has become more selective since the introduction of the new naturalization law in 2018. Nearly two-thirds of applications come from highly qualified and wealthy people, according to a study.

New, more restrictive integration criteria were introduced in 2018. In particular, linguistic knowledge and economic independence. For less well-off and low-skilled people, these criteria are significant obstacles.

Thus, C permit holders who did not go further than compulsory school went from 23.9 to 8.5%. On the contrary, highly qualified foreigners represent 57% of naturalized citizens, compared to a third under the old law.

For the Federal Migration Commission (CFM), this is a deviation, it said in a press release on Thursday. It therefore formulates nine proposals in order to design a more inclusive naturalization. (jah/ats)
