The Valais wine estate Leukersonne in Susten won the ‘Swiss winery of the year’ prize for the second time in a row on Friday evening in Bern. This is a unique event in 18 editions of the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse, indicated the organizers.

Valais won a total of four of the five special prizes, said the Vinea association and the Vinum newspaper, organizers of the competition, in a press release. In addition to the prize for best cellar of the year, the Leukersonne wine estate also won the red ‘coup de coeur’ prize for its 2019 Cornalin Selection and first place in the Gamay category.

That of white ‘favorite’ went to Domaines Chevaliers de Salgesch (VS) for its 2022 chardonnay and that of organic wine to the Weinschmiede cellar, also of Salgesch, for its 2022 Göttertrank.

Finally, the discovery prize was won by Andrea and Michael Weingartner from Hünenberg (ZG), who have been making wines for more than 20 years in Ticino, the press release said.

Wines from 18 cantons

This year the competition brought together nearly 3,000 wines from all over Switzerland, according to the organizers. Eighteen of the 26 Swiss cantons were represented in the competition.

Valais, the most important wine-growing region in Switzerland, presented the greatest number of wines (1183), followed by the canton of Vaud with 611 wines and German-speaking Switzerland with 439 wines. They were tasted and rated blindly by an international jury. In total, 45 trophies were distributed.

Overall, Valais finds itself on the top step 9 times in the fifteen different categories. Wines from the canton of Vaud, Switzerland’s second largest wine-growing region, took two first places. The other first places are occupied by wines from Fribourg, Geneva, Ticino and German-speaking Switzerland.
