Haute-Savoie: 450 wolf victims counted since the start of the year

D‘according to the Haute-Savoie prefecture, as of October 18, 2024, 174 reports of damage for 450 wolf victims were recorded. In comparison, on the same day last year in 2023, there were 185 reports for 414 victims. In 2024, 80% of reported victims are sheep, 9% goats, 8% cattle, 1% horses and 2% protection dogs.

The prefecture reminds that a report of damage corresponds to a call from a breeder to the departmental territorial directorate (DDT) who has found one or more animals from his herd dead or injured, and who suspects possible predation by wolves. Each report results in a damage report being made by an agent of the French Biodiversity Office (OFB).

This observation is made on site, in the presence of the breeder. It aims to note in particular the characteristics of the injuries or consumption on the victim(s). The report is then analyzed by the DDT to determine the cause of the damage. In application of the decree of July 9, 2019 relating to compensation for damage caused to domestic herds by wolves, bears and lynx, a compensation decision may, depending on the case, be pronounced.
