On the 20 Hours set, presenter Anaïs Baydemir explains the reasons for the intense rainfall affecting France on Thursday October 17.

Six departments are on red alert, 34 on orange alert, Thursday October 17. “This is an exceptional episode, mainly in the Cévennes, particularly in Ardèche. It started 48 hours ago and it happens every twenty years”explains Anaïs Baydemir, present on the set of 20 Hours, Thursday. At 6 p.m., 660 mm of rain was recorded in the Cévennes, the equivalent of three to four months of rain.

A conflict of air masses generated storms which got stuck in the Cévennes and in the Mediterranean. “We are still expecting a lot of rain for the next few hours (…) We are expecting an additional 100 mm, particularly towards the Cévennes”she warns. Since the start of the year, there has been significant rainfall. This is due to global warming. “One degree more is equivalent to 7% more humidity in the atmosphere”concludes Anaïs Baydemir.
