Morocco joins a Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change

This initiative, which aims to combat disinformation hindering climate action, marks a decisive step in global coordination to address the climate emergency, while the world is, according to the UN, at a “breaking point” .

Morocco’s membership in this initiative reflects its constant commitment to adapting to climate change, with renewable energies currently representing around 40% of electricity production capacity, a rate which will be increased to 52% before 2030.

Besides Morocco, nations such as Chile, Denmark, , the United Kingdom and Sweden have already confirmed their membership.

The Global Initiative for Climate Change Information Integrity invites like-minded countries and organizations to join forces.

Brazilian President Lula da Silva, host of the G20 Summit, stressed that “in the fight for survival (of the planet), there is no room for denial and disinformation.”

Brazil, which will host COP 30 in Belém, in the Amazon, in 2025, will continue to work with the UN and UNESCO on the Global Initiative for the Integrity of Information on Climate Change, he said. he affirmed during the third plenary session devoted to sustainability, climate change and just transition, describing the next COP as “the last chance to avoid an irreversible breakdown of the climate system”.

In this sense, he invited the international community to consider the creation of a Climate Change Council at the UN, which would bring together the different actors, processes and mechanisms that are now fragmented.

The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, for his part insisted on the importance of combating disinformation linked to climate change, whether outright denial, greenwashing or harassment of climate scientists, specifying that this fight will be carried out in collaboration with researchers and various committed partners.

“Our climate is at a breaking point. If we do not limit the rise in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius, chain disasters risk devastating all economies,” he launched as a “distress call”.

This Initiative will be structured around a Global Climate Change Information Integrity Fund that will fund in-depth research and strategic advocacy and diplomacy to help deconstruct climate-related misinformation.

Its objective is to promote the integrity of information on climate change in the international institutional agenda and to establish specific objectives as well as common lines of action.

It also intends to strengthen information integrity globally and combat fake news, by supporting public communication campaigns, civil society and scientific groups around the world, and by mobilizing key public actors and parties. stakeholders.

According to UNESCO, climate misinformation is increasingly being spread through social media, messaging apps and generative artificial intelligence. This situation reinforces the urgency of guaranteeing access to reliable and precise information on the impacts of the environmental crisis, at a time when the effects of climate change are increasingly being felt on a global scale.

This phenomenon has several serious consequences: it undermines scientific consensus, hampers the ability of authorities to respond effectively to the crisis, and threatens the safety of journalists and environmental advocates working on the front lines.
