Judo: Essonne is a hit!

With a regional dojo, a great dynamic of licensees and convincing results, Essonnais judo has been in good health since the start of the school year.

« In my opinion, 2024 will be a good springboard for the future. » This is what explained Fabrice Guilley, president of the Essonne Judo Committee, before the Games. A springboard approached in the best possible way by the local representatives. Shirine Boukli (FLAM 91) opened the way for the French Olympic team by winning a superb bronze medal in the under 48kg category. A little later, it was Joan-Benjamin Gaba (JCCMM) who achieved a almost perfect day, only losing in the final in his under 73kg category. Silver and bronze, followed by gold for the two judokas during the team event.

A high level at the rendezvous

Results which, inevitably, allowed Essonne to experience an active return to the tatami mats. With its 13,300 licensees at the end of last season, the department can now aim better. “ We had a relaunch of licenses, which is obviously positive”underlines Fabrice Guilley. “During Covid, we had around 7,000 members. After the pandemic, we had 8,000 licenses. The dynamic has been revived. We were able to carry out strong actions, particularly in schools. School judo is a highlight, a time of practice in the school program, which also makes it possible to encourage young people to join a club. »

The development of para-judo as a priority

With a regional Dojo near Brétigny-sur-Orge, Essonne can also count on a total of 118 clubs and 150 teachers who work throughout the year to develop the practice at the heart of the department. In particular the practice of para-judo, one of the major projects of the mandate which is opening. « We have para-judo and adapted sports activities in Essonne »assure Fabrice Guilley. “However, these activities could not be carried out for two years during the last term due to Covid-19. They were able to resume and I think that this can bring employability to people with disabilities, and consequently, consider them in a better way. » Attracting a whole new audience to judo is also the objective in Essonne.
