On the initiative of GECO (Gérontologie du Cœur d’Hérault) which brings together ten retirement homes – Orthus in Claret, L’Écureuil in Lodève, Les jardins du Riveral in Gignac, Montplaisir in Saint-Pargoire, Dr Raoul-Boubal at Pouget, Léon-Ronzier-Joly in Clermont-l’Hérault, Vincent-Badie in Paulhan and the Canalet gardens in Villeneuve-lès-Béziers – the Ehpad Olympiads took place at the private agricultural high school Vallée de l’Hérault, in Gignac. A collaboration between the two organizations since 2020.
The territorial resource center, represented by Ida Perez, participated for professional caregivers. Jean-Pierre Combes, president of Sport Santé du Lodévois – with a site in Lodève, one in Clermont-l’Hérault and soon one in Gignac – offers physical activities adapted to each person’s ability. The objective is to mix residents from different nursing homes. The games were orchestrated by Guilhem Rambaud, deputy director of GECO.
Young people in contact with older people
Caroline Roux, nurse and teacher at the agricultural high school, explains the concept: “For a year, the nursing homes have been preparing games with the residents for this final meeting. With the various partners, we have designed suitable exercises ranging from archery to volleyball, handball, basketball and ball games and agility.” Benjamin Gil, lead teacher in adapted physical activity at the Lodève nursing home, selected twelve students from the People and Territorial Services (Sapat) sector so that they would be in direct contact with the 50 elderly people.
