Alexandra Bachand signs an olfactory work at the Museum of Fine Arts

EXPOSURE. Known for being the creative soul behind La Grange du Perfumer, Magogoise Alexandra Bachand is now one of the new artists to enter the Sherbrooke Museum of Fine Arts.

Alexandre Bachand was invited to share his creative impulses in the “Forest Walk” exhibition, alongside the animated work of Thomas Corriveau. Ms. Bachand presents “Do you hear the song of the canary?”, an olfactory work in response to the painting “ Brûlé” by the painter Jean-Paul Lemieux.

The perfumer explains that she took a look at the fragility of life in the face of major climatic upheavals, more precisely in the face of the destruction of forests by fires. “In the process of creating my works, I question myself in multiple ways about the perception of a smell and the emergence of feelings, in order to be able to weave links between the agreements that I construct. The evocative power of an odor lies in the accuracy of the narration it underlies. What impact does the smell of a forest have in us if it has connotations of dead leaves and burnt, even calcined wood?” asks the artist based on Chemin des Pères in Magog.

Ms. Bachand also created a second olfactory wall work in the Espace dialogue gallery of the Museum, called “Per fumum sylvestre”.

In parallel with this exhibition, the MBAS is presenting the 2024 edition of the “Biennale des artistes des Cantons-de-l’Est”, under the theme of landscape ecology. Some artists from Estrie exhibit their talents there, including Magogoise Guylaine Couture, with an artist’s book specially designed for the occasion. Entitled “Our organized organic horizons”, his work integrates different mediums such as photography, engraving or drawing.

Note that Guylaine Couture’s artistic work is part of several prestigious collections, such as the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, Queen’s University, the University of Washington and the Bibliothèque Cantonale et Universitaire de Lausanne.
