The spectacle was magnificent and some people did not hesitate to stay up all night to see it. During the night of Thursday 10 to Friday 11 October 2024, northern lights were seen in the sky of Seine-Maritime, as everywhere in France.
This phenomenon results from a solar flare detected by scientists’ instruments.
Asked by actu.frOlivier Katz, forecaster at Comea (Operational Space Meteorology Center of the Alps) explained: “Wednesday’s eruption was really very powerful, and sent very energetic particles”.
What is the Northern Lights?
It is a colorful light phenomenon found mainly in the sky around the North magnetic pole. They are the consequence of the collision between particles emitted by the sun and the Earth. According to the Natural History Museum, the colors of the Northern Lights (often green or pink) are the result of a collision between particles from the Sun and gas molecules present in the atmosphere. “This shock excites the molecules and when they de-excite, these molecules emit light (photons).”
Mainly in the north of the department
And that was an understatement! The northern lights “hunters” were served this night mainly on the coast of the department where the sky was clearer.
Which was the case at Cape Antifer.
In Saint-Maclou-la-Brière, near Goderville, around 11 p.m.
Or at Octeville-sur-Mer airport, near Le Havre.
In May 2024, the Northern Lights were also visible in the sky over Seine-Maritime.
