The canton of Geneva dedicates the 2023 vintage of Vigne des Nations to the Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights. Awarded each year, this award is the symbol of Geneva’s recognition of an international organization working for a better world.

The 2023 parchet of the Vigne des Nations was presented Thursday by the President of the Council of State, Nathalie Fontanet, to Christian Bovet, President of the Academy Council. “This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions. It is therefore quite naturally to the Academy that the 2023 vintage returns,” underlines the canton in a press release.

Created by the University of Geneva and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in 2007, the Academy has become a reference institution in the field of international humanitarian law. It offers training, conducts research and organizes events from its headquarters at Villa Moynier.

“From the first Convention of 1864, humanitarian law has been the foundation on which international Geneva was built,” noted Ms. Fontanet. “Today we must vigorously recall the importance of the Geneva Conventions, but also that of international law and international humanitarian law,” added the President of the Council of State.

“The support of political authorities for the Academy’s missions is particularly important, in these times when international humanitarian law and human rights are too often called into question, in so many ways. (…) The work of the vineyard is a beautiful illustration of the perseverance and sometimes the resilience that we must all demonstrate in these areas of law,” declared Christian Bovet, also quoted in the press release.

The attribution of the vintage to an international organization is a custom that dates back to 1995. The first dedication was for the United Nations Office in Geneva to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations. Located on the hillside of Lully in Bernex (GE), Vigne des Nations is made up of two grape varieties: Chardonnay and Gamaret.
