The day of October 9 and the night that followed were marked by storm Kirk, which shook all of France.
If the Paris region was particularly affected (the department of Seine-et-Marne was on red alert for flooding), just like the West of France (more than 30 departments on orange alert), Eastern France was rather spared.
However, strong gusts of wind were still observed in the Haut-Rhin.
120 km/h au Markstein
According to the Météo Suivi Alsace account on Facebook, it was before midnight that the first big gusts started, particularly on the summit of Markstein.
Then, the wind intensified until 3 a.m. “We are entering the period in which the wind will very quickly strengthen in the Haut-Rhin between the western facade and a large part of the Haut-Rhin, with in less than an hour gusts of wind which could reach 80 to 95 km/h, loc,” wrote Météo Suivi Alsace on his account.
The intensity continued to increase throughout the night, including a peak at 113km/h at Basel-Mulhouse airport. The end of the windy episode was recorded around 4:30 a.m., and normality returned around 8 a.m.
According to France 3, the Saint-Louis-Basel train line was cut for a few hours. Firefighters intervened more than 50 times in the area.
