Legislative elections in Senegal: former President Sall will withdraw from the Paris Pact for people and the planet

The former head of state of Senegal (2012-2024) was appointed to the post of special envoy in November 2023, shortly before the end of his second term by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Launched in 2023, the Pact for People and Planet aims to overhaul the global financial system in order to fight both global warming and poverty.

Mr. Sall, who this week was named head of the list of an opposition coalition for the November legislative elections, will withdraw from the 4P from October 9.

Mr. Sall’s decision is explained by his inauguration as head of the list of the Takku Wallu Senegal coalition, according to the RTS website which cites a letter from the former president addressed to Mr. Macron.

“In these circumstances, and to avoid any risk of incompatibility and conflict of interest, I have decided to withdraw from my activities as special envoy of the Paris Pact for people and the planet,” can we read in the correspondence.

The return to Senegal of Mr. Sall, who lives abroad, is currently uncertain.

President Bassirou Diomaye, elected in March with 54% of the vote, found himself with a Parliament dominated by supporters of the former president. It announced its dissolution in September, causing early legislative elections.

The General Directorate of Elections is expected to publish the provisional list of successful candidates on Monday.
