On the night of October 7, 2024, the Russian army announced that it had shot down 21 Ukrainian drones, including 12 over Crimea, a region annexed by Russia in 2014. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, these drones were trying to attacked strategic sites on Russian territory, but the anti-aircraft defense systems managed to neutralize them. In addition to those destroyed in Crimea, six other drones were shot down in the Kursk region, an area where the Ukrainian army has been carrying out an offensive since the beginning of August. The other three drones were intercepted in the Belgorod, Bryansk and Voronezh regions, all of which border Ukraine.

No reports of casualties or material damage were immediately reported. However, a fire broke out at an oil depot in Feodosia, Crimea, shortly after the nighttime drone attacks. Local authorities have not established a direct link between this fire and the airstrikes. Rescue and fire teams were sent to the site, and a state of emergency was declared in this port city located on the Black Sea.

Russia regularly reports the destruction of Ukrainian drones targeting its infrastructure, particularly energy sites. These strikes are often claimed by kyiv as a response to Russian bombings which, for more than two years, have continued to hit Ukraine, causing numerous human losses and significant destruction.

As the conflict between the two countries escalates, drone warfare appears to play a key role in this escalation, with attacks on both sides almost daily.
