Meyrin, May 5

Yes, this canton has its own experience, built by its history and its geographical position. Since the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in the 17th century, through the industrial revolution at the end of the 19th century and the need for labor forces after the last world war, Geneva has welcomed a number of migrants who either fled their lands which had become hostile, or were looking for work. Many of them settled in our city, bringing their genius and their know-how which contributed to the economic, social and cultural development of our canton.

Today, the attractiveness of Geneva is due to its worldwide reputation for the European headquarters of the UN, the presence of the ICRC and the multitude of NGOs surrounding it, and its centers of expertise linked to watchmaking. , commerce, hotels and restaurants and CERN among other economic areas. The fact that today the resident population is made up of 40% foreigners is therefore not surprising. Not surprising, but that’s precisely what makes Geneva so special.

It is important to note this reality in view of the next vote on June 9, a vote relating to the extension of civil rights for foreign residents established for more than eight years in Switzerland and Geneva. These residents work in Geneva, pay their taxes there, use and appreciate the infrastructure (connectivity with the world, public transport, nurseries, schools, sports facilities, etc.), the wide variety of cultural offerings (various performance halls and varied, museums, libraries, etc.) and an exceptional quality of life, in a unique landscaped setting with the harbor, the Rhône, the Salève, the Jura and Mont-Blanc.

Why couldn’t they express their opinions, their proposals as the Genevans do, or at least some of them? Why not establish “Geneva citizenship” which would not imply the obligation to be naturalized? The particularity of this cosmopolitan Geneva could thus become fully embraced by voting yes on June 9. It is in no way a question of “giving them room”, but rather of enriching our democracy with a dynamic segment of our population: they live in Geneva, let’s give them the opportunity to give their voice to the Republic!
