Screenwriter Sophie Adriansen and designer Anjale have teamed up to evoke an often overlooked scandal. Through their comic strip Besides mothers, the scandal of forced abortions in the two authors intend to highlight the struggle of women for their rights, explains 20 Minutes, Thursday October 3, 2024.

Between 1960 and 1970, a doctor performed abortions and sterilizations on non-consenting women. The truth about this story was finally revealed but few people are aware of it, despite an attempt at a commission of inquiry and the production of a documentary on the subject.

Fighting to control your body

Accompanied by Anjale, Sophie Adriansen decided to tell the fictional stories of two women, one living in mainland and the other in Reunion Island. Throughout the comic, readers will be able to discover “the extreme difficulties and paradoxes of the struggle led by women in France to control their bodies”, details the Vuibert publishing house on its website.

But this is not the author’s first attempt, as her extensive bibliography proves. In 2021, she notably addressed the theme of postpartum depression in her book The Replacement. Known as much for her works of general literature as for those intended for young people, Sophie Adriansen is also committed to making writing and reading more inclusive.
