Posted today at 5:09 a.m.

Northern lights were seen overnight from Sunday to Monday from Säntis. A camera immortalized this colorful natural spectacle between the gaps in the clouds at 1:50 a.m., said the Federal Meteorological Service.

The last time the Northern Lights were observed in Switzerland was on November 5, 2023, the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss announced early Monday morning on the online platform X, formerly Twitter.

The Northern Lights are rare in the Alpine region, a press release from MeteoSwiss indicated at the time. Normally, they are visible in the North Pole region.

Solar wind

The colorful spectacle is the result of an interaction between charged particles from space and Earth’s atmosphere. It is triggered by the so-called solar wind, which consists of charged particles, mainly electrons and protons, ejected by the sun.

Green aurora borealis often forms through interaction with oxygen in the upper layers of the atmosphere, while red or purple colors can form through interaction with nitrogen.
