More fear than harm. THE Wednesday October 2a somewhat unusual incident took place in Haute-Savoie. In fact, it took place more than 3000 meters above sea level.

On the construction site of Grands Montets in Chamonix, which is supposed to allow visitors to take a cable car to this highest point, a crane broke.

Extreme conditions

According to the Dauphiné Libéré, it is the arrow of the horror which became dislocated while the workers were carrying out a defrosting operation.

“After 6 days of bad weather, snow and wind on the Grands-Montets peak, the teams in charge of the cable car reconstruction work were able to access the site located at an altitude of 3,300m this morning. The equipment de-icing operations began at 12 p.m., particularly for the luffing jib crane,” the Mont-Blanc company said in a press release.

“At 12:45 p.m., after “cleaning” the counter-jib and the gangways, when making the boom horizontal to facilitate de-icing operations, the boom broke in the central part. It rested in the immediate vicinity of the land, on the mountainside,” they continued.

It must be said that the structure may have been weakened by the difficult conditions which are felt at an altitude of more than 3,200 meters. Between October 1 and 2, wind gusts of 120 km/h were expected.

In the meantime, the Grands Montets cable car project is slowing down. The latter will replace the cable car which was in place until 2018, and which disappeared due to a fire.
