Manitoba NDP holds first convention since Wab Kinew’s election

The New Democratic Party (NDP) of Manitoba is holding its convention this weekend in Winnipeg, the first since the election of Wab Kinew, who remains the most popular prime minister in Canada.

The mood is high in the reception rooms of the Fairmont Hotel. Since his election at the head of the province with a large majority, the NPD of Manitoba is riding positive momentum.

British Columbia Premier David Eby and Leader of the NPD of Canada, Jagmeet Singh, were also in the Manitoba capital for the event which brought together 400 members of the party.

Jagmeet Singh took the opportunity to prepare the ground for the by-election scheduled for September in the federal riding of Elmwood-Transcona, northeast of Winnipeg. Friday, he rang the doorbells of several houses in the neighborhood to encourage residents to vote for the candidate who will be aligned with the New Democrats.

This is a really important by-election. We are going to have a strong campaign and invest a lot of energy in the countyhe said while speaking at the convention on Saturday.

The elected representative of the House of Commons also took the opportunity to salute the work of the Premier of Manitoba by highlighting his commitments for free contraceptives, to feed children at school, programs to invest more for people rather than billionaires to make life more affordable.

Current events enter the debates

The announcement of the establishment of a pro-Palestinian encampment on the campus of the University of Manitoba from May 7 to 9 fueled some of the debates.

Young people have the right to share their voice, but at the same time, we must ensure that any message that is shared by young people is done in a manner [..] safedefended Manitoba Minister of Sport, Culture and Heritage, Glen Simard.

The Brandon East MLA spoke cautiously: We have a population that is very multicultural. These challenges are sometimes found in us. It’s up to us to listen to see how we can better support all our communities.
